Whoever has never given that speed up in a Whatsapp audio throw the first cell phone to get to the point of the message or gain time to solve other cucumbers of the day.

IT analyst Daniel Costa, 43, is one of those people. He always considered himself a calm guy, but the possibility of speeding up the messages or attending college and graduate classes —which he attends concurrently— made him realize an unusual agitation.

“I can no longer follow videos at normal speed. I am anxious to get to the point I need to hear right away. Even if I could, I would also speed up some people”, he says, referring to the “endless meetings with some slower people”.

Daniel recognizes, however, that so much haste has already hindered him. “I had to go back a few videos to listen again at normal speed. I ended up wasting time”, he laughs.

“I accelerate everything that is possible. And with that, I end up getting more and more accelerated. I even realize that when sending audio, I already speak at speed two”, says social media Ariel Komatsu Miranda, 36.

“I also don’t have the patience to listen to the audios and I always go ahead to see if there’s more. I’ve already lost a lot of important information because I skipped the message”, he confesses.

Ariel says that this rush “too much” came with the pandemic. “I accelerated too much and now I can’t go back”, says the mother of Rafaela, 10, Monique, 9, and Caio, 8.

For psychologist Karina Theodoro, this “normalized rush” in our society can be a danger. “When we accelerate a message, speech can change to an angry tone. How does that get into our heads? How many relationships are broken by misinterpretation?”, She asks.

“From the point of view of psychiatry, acceleration is normal. Worry comes in when the person leaves this context of rushing —when finishing work or studying, or when going on vacation—, but remains agitated”, explains Mário Rodrigues Louzã, coordinator of the Attention and Hyperactivity Deficit Program at the Institute of Psychiatry at HC.

Student Gustavo Margato, 18, is also a fan of “2x speed” for everything. “When I see accelerated classes, I force myself to pay more attention,” he points out.

The feeling of gaining time by listening to messages or classes at speed two can be unrealistic, says Louzã. “The human mind has linear processing capacity and supports up to one speed. When sentences are very accelerated, there is no time for the brain to concatenate what is being said. The person learns in a mixed, confused or superficial way”, he points out.

“Human evolution does not happen at the same speed as technology. We have to accept that we have limits”, concludes the specialist.
