The return to school was not able to interrupt the sequence of bad months in the trade on Rua 25 de Março. Univinco (a union of tenants in the region) points to a decline of around 10% in January compared to the same month last year.
For Marcelo Mouawad, director of the entity, the negative scenario at the beginning of the year is attributed to the lack of consumer confidence in the economy and the degradation of the center of São Paulo.
“Instead of going to a single store, the consumer would still go for a walk, maybe eat something, meet some other places. If it’s not very pleasant, he ends up doing only the obligatory”, he says.
There is still, however, an expectation of a slowdown in the drop in sales. In December, the region recorded a 20% reduction compared to the same period in 2021, according to Univinco.
“Here we are specialized in season, but back to school did not get to animate. In Carnival, perhaps, it has a little more impact”, he says.
