UFOs do not have alien origins, says NASA panel – 09/14/2023 – Science

The first report of the independent panel convened by NASA to scientifically analyze the issue of UFOs (unidentified flying objects) did not find any sign of an extraterrestrial origin for the sightings, although some of them remain unexplained.

The American space agency announced the creation of a research directorate for the area, thus allowing a more organized flow to investigate these episodes, now officially called “unidentified anomalous phenomena”, or UAP in its acronym in English.

“The main conclusion of the study is that we have much more to learn. The independent NASA team found no evidence that UAPs [óvnis] have extraterrestrial origins, but we don’t know what they are,” said US Space Agency Administrator Bill Nelson.

Although some of the phenomena identified have not received an explanation from scientists, they highlight that, in many cases, the difficulties are mainly related to the poor quality of the associated data.

Classifying UFOs as “one of the greatest mysteries on our planet”, Nicola Fox, associate administrator for Scientific Missions at NASA, reinforced how the lack of reliable data makes careful scientific analysis difficult.

According to her, “although there are numerous eyewitness reports and images associated with UFOs”, this material is not very consistent and detailed, which means that it cannot be “used to draw definitive scientific conclusions about the nature and origin” of the phenomena.

To try to resolve the issue of data quality and reliability, considered the biggest obstacle to serious and in-depth investigation into UFOs, scientists have proposed a series of measures for NASA to improve its monitoring and analysis tools.

Among the recommendations presented are taking advantage of the Federal Aviation Administration structure and NASA’s own Aviation Safety Reporting System to collect and analyze the material.

The special agency is still analyzing the conclusions presented and how it can incorporate what was presented by the researchers, but has already committed to strengthening its artificial intelligence and machine learning arm.

Leader of the panel of scientists, astrophysicist David Spergel suggested that the population’s collaboration should not be underestimated. In response to journalists, he stated that cell phone applications, for example, could help in collecting useful data for researchers, being “an opportunity to involve the general public in scientific practice”.

More than investigating potential extraterrestrial visits, a robust monitoring system for mysterious phenomena in the skies serves to improve aerospace safety as a whole, including commercial aviation.

“This was the first time NASA took concrete steps to seriously look at UAPs [óvnis]”, said the agency’s administrator, Bill Nelson, reinforcing the purpose of “changing the conversation from sensationalism to science”.

According to him, NASA also wants to ensure that information “is shared transparently around the world.”

The head of NASA highlighted, however, that, due to the dimensions of the Universe and the large number of potentially habitable planets outside the Solar System, the chances of life outside Earth cannot be ignored.

“We understand that ours is not the only galaxy, and that there are billions and billions of them. And that each of these galaxies, including ours, has billions and billions of stars,” he said.

‘ALIEN MUMMIES’

Asked about the supposed “alien mummies” presented at a Congress session in Mexico, experts were skeptical about the claims.

In a public hearing that addressed the topic of UFOs, Jaime Maussan, who claims to be an expert on the subject, presented what, according to him, were two mummified bodies of aliens.

Without presenting concrete evidence, Maussan stated that analyzes indicated that the corpses were dated to be more than one year old, in addition to more than 30% of the DNA being “unknown to humanity”.

Coordinator of the independent group of researchers, David Spergel said he only knew the story “through Twitter”, but left a simple recommendation so that the case can be scrutinized by scientists: “Make the samples available [das supostas múmias] to the global scientific community and we’ll see what’s there.”

The scientists highlighted that the content produced by NASA, from analysis of lunar rocks to other materials, is open to the public and researchers for analysis.

The hearing in the Mexican Congress was inspired by an episode that occurred in the United States Congress.

In July, former American intelligence official David Grusch stated, before a Legislative committee, that the country’s authorities omit evidence about the existence of extraterrestrials, including biological samples collected from aliens.

Asked to comment on the former spy’s allegations, the experts avoided getting involved in the controversy.

“I can’t speak for other parts of the government, but NASA is transparent,” said the agency’s administrator, who refuted several of Grusch’s accusations. “Show me the evidence [do que ele está alegando]” he demanded.
