A supermoon can be seen this Tuesday (1st), according to the National Observatory, from anywhere on Earth. It is enough that the weather is clear and favorable for observation.
Josina Nascimento, an astronomer at the observatory, explains that it will be possible to observe a moon that is brighter than usual.
In addition to this Tuesday’s supermoon, there will be a second one at the end of August, on the 30th. This second phenomenon is called a blue supermoon, because it will be the second full moon of the month.
Normally, the phenomenon occurs from one to six times a year, always during the full or new moon phases.
What is Supermoon?
The term supermoon refers to times when the natural satellite becomes visibly brighter and larger, but the concept is not consolidated in the scientific community.
The observatory says the expression was first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in an American magazine that is no longer published.
The characteristics of a supermoon occur because the satellite is at the place in its orbit that is closest to Earth — this point is called perigee. However, the distance from the Moon to Earth that would characterize a supermoon differs between research institutions.
