This Saturday’s lunar eclipse (28) could be observed in countries such as the Philippines, Kenya and England and in some regions of Brazil. In these places, the interposition of the Earth between the Sun and the Moon covered part of the satellite.

The phenomenon occurs when the Moon enters the Earth’s shadow. There are two types of shadow: the umbra, the dark shadow that does not receive any light from the Sun, and the penumbra, which is the light shadow that still receives light from the Sun.

When the Moon enters the penumbra, there is a penumbral eclipse, like this Saturday, and when it enters the umbra there is a partial eclipse. When the satellite is completely within the umbra, there is a total eclipse

In Brazil, it was possible to observe the phenomenon in states such as Piauí and Sergipe, with a maximum coverage of 6%, during the birth of the Moon.

The next lunar eclipses visible in the country will occur next year, on March 25th and between September 17th and 18th, but it will only be possible to observe the spectacle in its entirety in 2025, when the Moon turns red.

Two weeks ago, it was an annular solar eclipse that enchanted observers. Residents of cities in the North and Northeast of Brazil were able to enjoy the spectacle in its entirety, while in municipalities like São Paulo, overcast weather prevented observation and generated memes.

During a solar eclipse, the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, covering the solar disk. This can occur in four ways: total, annular, partial and hybrid.

In a total eclipse, the apparent size of the Moon is equivalent to that of the Sun, which is completely covered. In the annulus, the apparent size is slightly smaller, leaving a circle of sunlight visible around the Moon’s shadow, the “ring of fire”.

A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon covers only part of the solar disk and, finally, in a hybrid eclipse, there is a transition between the annular and the total.
