Pro-rector of USP is appointed scientific director of FAPESP – 04/10/2023 – Science

Last Thursday (6th), Márcio de Castro Silva Filho was appointed as the new scientific director of FAPESP (São Paulo State Research Support Foundation).
Silva Filho is a professor at the Department of Genetics at the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture (Esalq), linked to USP, and also serves as dean of graduate studies at the same university.
Before the nomination, Fapesp’s Superior Council developed a triple list of nominees to assume the direction, with Silva Filho at the head of this list.
Although he has already been appointed, the pro-rector will only take up his post at the foundation on April 27th.
According to Fapesp, Silva Filho has a degree in agronomic engineering from the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA). He also holds a PhD in plant molecular biology from the Catholic University of Louvain, located in Belgium.
In addition, he has served as a visiting researcher at the University of Melbourne, in Australia, and at the Ohio State University, in the United States.
The professor also has links with other academic institutions in Brazil, such as the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (Aciesp).
