NASA has released detailed images of the Ring Nebula, located in the constellation Lyra, taken by the James Webb Space Telescope.
2,600 light-years away from Earth, the nebula in question, also known as Messier 57, is quite popular. The beautiful shape of the celestial object —denounced in its name— can be seen even by amateur telescopes.
The object is a planetary nebula, which means it is the remains of a dying star that has expelled much of its mass. In the case of the Ring Nebula, such an ejection occurred about 4,000 years ago.
“We always knew it was a beautiful nebula, but what we see here is spectacular,” said Albert Zijlstra, professor of astrophysics at the University of Manchester.
The star responsible for the show is visible right in the center of the nebula, where temperatures exceed 100,000 degrees. The temperature in this central region is higher
Brazilian scientists are part of the team that is analyzing the new images. In addition to them, there are researchers from the United Kingdom, France, Canada, USA, Sweden, Spain, Ireland and Belgium.
