Find out how the DNA paternity test is done – 06/21/2023 – Science

This Wednesday (21), the family of Gugu Liberato learned of a process in which the businessman Ricardo Rocha, 48, asks for a paternity test to prove that he is the legitimate son of the former presenter, in order to be entitled to part of the inheritance.

In the action, he requests that the alleged relatives undergo a DNA test. If they refuse, he defends that the presenter’s body be exhumed for the test to be carried out.

According to law 14.138/2021, in cases of death of the alleged father or lack of knowledge of his whereabouts, the DNA test can be carried out on the closest relatives, followed by the most distant ones. And if the relative refuses to take the exam, which was not the case of Gugu’s family, the Justice can recognize it as a presumption of paternity, with no need to carry out the exhumation.

In order to carry out a DNA test, it is necessary to collect samples of blood or saliva (buccal cells) from each person involved. The international recommendation is to collect saliva, since blood samples may interfere with the analysis if the person has had a bone marrow transplant or transfusion.

There are also laboratories in the country that perform the DNA test with strands of hair or fur (at least ten strands), pieces of nails, teeth, buccal cells, semen and skin.

Laboratories report that the test allows one to say with 99.9999% certainty that the alleged father is the child’s father, or with 100% certainty that the alleged father is not the father.

There is a possibility that the paternity test is free of charge. For this, the interested party should contact the Public Prosecutor’s Office or the Public Defender’s Office, which provide for gratuity for needy people.
