‘You are occupying the bed of someone who deserved more’ – 09/30/2024 – Life of an Alcoholic

“Do you know where it is?” That’s what I heard when I woke up in a daze with a white light in my face. He vaguely remembered what had happened. I was in hospital after having consumed a lot of alcohol and some anxiolytic tablets, better known as black stripe.

The pain that started in the head turned into torment. The doctor came to lecture me saying that I was occupying the bed of someone who deserved more. The guilt I felt was huge. I myself didn’t understand why I was there, things were still confusing for me, but she insisted on saying that what I had done was absurd.

The guilt increased. I looked around and saw many patients from the most diverse wards, and my problem seemed to be the smallest of all. At least in the eyes of the doctor on duty.

This was not the only time I faced an embarrassing situation due to alcoholism. I also went to some emergency rooms drunk, asking for help, and every time they sent me to a long waiting line. With some contempt, I noticed. I understand the lack of preparation. When someone sees a person completely drunk, the first step is to move away from them. But if the person arrives at a hospital, there is pain. And that should be enough.

It’s been over fifteen years since I’ve been in a situation like this. Sometimes I find myself wondering if doctors have made any progress on this subject. Do they still treat a person under the same conditions as they treated me?

Alcoholism kills and needs to be seen as an urgent problem. I realize how difficult it is to see it as a disease that harms so much and has so many aggravating factors.

Of course, I’m just an alcoholic who rambles on the most diverse subjects in the universe that I can handle. I’m afraid for people who still suffer from alcohol and find themselves adrift as I often did. I feel sorry to imagine that someone will suffer as much as I did and also feel so guilty.

I hope that public policies include treatment for this disease in their programs. It is necessary that these health professionals receive specific training, which provides them with in-depth knowledge about this matter. A prevention policy and an unprejudiced approach are more than necessary. The drink is the cheapest anxiolytic and is used by the entire population. You can’t be too careful.
