Works by the artist from Rio de Janeiro, Athos Bulcão, arrive in Porto Alegre for the first time for an exhibition at Farol Santander (Rua Sete de Setembro, 1028). A complete artist, his work experimented with drawing, painting, panels, vestments and liturgical vestments. The exposure Athos Bulcão at Farol Santander opens this Wednesday at 9 am and will be on view until June 25, and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 7 pm. Tickets (R$ 17.00, with half-price options) available at the box office.
Two more events will be present at the show: on the same Wednesday, at 7 pm, a meeting is scheduled with curators Marília Panitz and André Severo, for a chat about the artist’s life and work. In addition, the exhibition offers another round of conversation, on Thursday, also at 7 pm, this time with the curators and guest Maria Ivone dos Santos, artist and researcher, professor at the Department of Visual Arts at Ufrgs. Those interested in participating in the activities can register using the link available on the Farol Santander portal.
The initiative brings back to the cultural scene the varied work of the artist who crossed the century, always exciting the public and critics. The exhibition makes a selection of the fabulous and extensive work of Athos, bringing more than 160 works that can be visited in the mezzanine of the building and also in the external area, allowing a wide experience for the public. The set highlights paintings, projects and drawings, graphic pieces, tile panels, photomontages, masks and objects from the period from 1940 to 2000.
The artist’s hallmark is the integration of art into architecture, as shown by the sculptural walls of the National Congress and also of the Sarah Kubitschek Hospital, where he died at the age of 90, a victim of Parkinson’s disease, in Brasília, in 2008.
Three sets of different tile patterns created by the artist, are in one of the rooms on the mezzanine floor, and allow the public to have the experience of creating their own work of art. In the external area, two cubes with façades made of tiles from different cities in Brazil and abroad call the public to discover Athos’ work inside the Lighthouse. As the artist himself said, “art exists to impact, to provoke people”.
The artist’s legacy is preserved at the Athos Bulcão Foundation, in Brasília. The collection includes studio creations – drawing, painting, engraving, photomontage, objects, graphic work in newspapers, magazines, books and album covers.
The show is curated by Marília Panitz and André Severo and produced by Daiana Castilho Dias, president of the Institute for Research and Promotion of Art and Culture (Ipac).
