With Lula absent, candidate in Campinas uses old video – 09/29/2024 – Panel
Federal deputy Pedro Tourinho (PT) reused a 2020 recording with President Lula (PT) in his videos from the current campaign for Mayor of Campinas (SP).
In the old video, recorded for Tourinho’s campaign for mayor that year, Lula defines him as “a companion who has had an extraordinary participation in the Campinas City Council”, a position that the current federal parliamentarian held at the time. This excerpt was cut from the material in the new recording.
The president’s limited participation has become a problem for many of the candidates he supports in 2024. Lula has had difficulty reconciling the agendas of president and electoral campaigner.
This weekend, for example, he would participate in events in São Bernardo do Campo and Diadema, but traveled to Mexico to participate in the inauguration of president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
Tourinho’s opponents criticize the strategy, which they consider a way to deceive the electorate about Lula’s involvement in the campaign. In addition to him, Dário Saadi (Republicans), current mayor, and Rafa Zimbaldi (Citizenship) are competing for the position.
In a statement, the PT campaign states that they used “any and all Pedro and Lula material that we consider beautiful, such as their beautiful meeting in the 2020 video.”
“Unlike the ineligible Jair Bolsonaro and Dário Saadi, Lula is the president of the country, to whom we thank him for his support and partnership. Expressed in meetings, calls and two more videos in support of our candidacy”, he states.
