On Sunday (28), the Provincial Palace, located at Praça Heliodoro Balbi, downtown Manaus, hosted the event ‘Universo Geek Museu 2023’, in reference to Nerd Pride Day, celebrated on May 25, the program was free, It started at 9am and lasted until 7pm.

During the event, some of the attractions were the exhibitions of designers, cartoonists and collectors, as well as a fair selling geek items, a swordplay dispute, a board games area, workshops, musical attractions, among others.

Tayane Oliveira is 18 years old and participated in the event, wearing a wig, contact lenses in her eyes and a very special costume inspired by the moon. In an interview, she tells how she started in the geek world. “For me to enter this world, the first thing I did was watch an anime called ‘Another’. I became very interested in cosplaying,” she recalls.

Cosplay is a term that mixes the words costume (from English, fantasy) and roleplay (joke or interpretation in translation). It is one of the most popular activities among pop culture and geeks, where participants dress up as fictional or pop culture characters.

To facilitate access to cosplay, a Brazilian term called cospobre inhabits the geek universe, so the public who also wants to dress up can be included in the activities without spending too much.

“From the beginning I always wanted to be a cosplayer, but I couldn’t afford it, I would have to have money to buy things and that’s when I decided to do my cospobre, all I do is cospobre, I created this character that practically doesn’t even exist, I call it her as a princess of the moon”,

says Tayan.

Journalist Catharine Senna, 27, has accumulated more than 80 cosplays throughout her career, participated in the event representing one of the characters from the “Guardians of the Galaxies” franchise and tells how she started her relationship with the geek universe. “It started in 2010, at my school they publicized the events, I went, I liked it and I started to get into this environment and I am here today”,

summed up.

Clans and Feuds

Geek culture is not just video games. One of the most popular modalities among the public simulates a real dispute between players.

Caíque Sobrinho is one of the leaders and trainers of the Dragões do Norte group. The group has existed for six years in the Amazonian capital and meets for Swordplay disputes. “At the end of 2019 we got together to participate in a competition in São Paulo, we organized competitions for our members and for the general public to participate”,

said Caique.

Questioned about how the game works, Caíque is didactic. “Swordplay as a sport follows basic rules for you to win a duel: you need to take two points from your opponent, each place you hit you take a point in the limbs, legs and arms, you take a point, but if you hit the person’s torso you already wins the fight”,

explained.

Caíque praised the initiative of the event and believes in the importance of continuity and expansion in other zones of the city.

“It’s very good, especially on weekends, like today, Sunday, when there’s usually nothing to do, so it’s good to have an event like this, I also hope there are other places in the city besides downtown to give greater access, because otaku have it everywhere”,

said, between laughs.
