‘Trama Canoê’ exhibition takes Amazonian handicrafts to a museum in São Paulo

After a period in Rio, an exhibition promoted by Sebrae Amazonas will have a season at ‘A Casa’, in Pinheiros, from May to September

Manaus (AM) – The exhibition that took the art of the traditional Amazonian peoples to Rio de Janeiro will be scheduled in the largest city in Latin America. “Trama Canoê” is on display at A Casa – Museum of the Brazilian Object, in Pinheiros, São Paulo, open for visitation until September 10, 2023. The exhibition features products from eight associations involving artisans from 16 indigenous ethnic groups and riverside communities .

At the Centro Sebrae de Referência do Artesanato Brasileiro (CRAB), in Rio de Janeiro, the exhibition took place between November 2022 and April 2023 and generated revenues of more than BRL 78,000 in the period. Associations from the municipalities of Barcelos, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Benjamin Constant, Maués, Rio Preto da Eva, Novo Airão, Careiro Castanho and the capital Manaus participate in the initiative.

For the technical director of Sebrae Amazonas, Lamisse Cavalvanti, the invitation by the A Casa museum to exhibit handicrafts from Amazonas is a reason for honor and happiness.

“Accompanying the development of our products and, mainly, of our talented entrepreneurial artisans since the insertion of Sebrae only motivates us to believe that we are fulfilling our mission”,

The executive director of A Casa, Ana Letícia Fialho, considers the partnership with Sebrae to be another way of sharing the purpose of valuing knowledge and craftsmanship. “We are also aware of the importance of engaging in the preservation and enhancement of the Amazon region, not only for its biodiversity, but for the sociocultural dimension expressed in the artisanal production of different riverside and indigenous communities presented in the exhibition”.

Based on the narrative of the canoe and material culture, “Trama Canoê” displays objects used in everyday life, such as baskets, oars, fishing nets, vases, utilitarian ceramics, among others, which can be produced with raw materials from the forest. amazon. The exhibition also brings the concept of the plot, an ancestral rescue of elements that refer to indigenous daily life.

The productions belong to the associations Núcleo de Arte e Cultura Indígena de Barcelos (Nacib), Association of Indigenous Artisans of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Assai), Association of Indigenous Women Artisans (Amatu), Associations of Indigenous Women of Alto Rio Negro (Amarn) , Association of United to Win Artisans (AAUV), Basketry Baniwa, Teçume da Floresta and Surisawa.

The exhibition at the Museum of the Brazilian Object has the support of the Government of Amazonas, through the Executive Secretariat for Labor and Entrepreneurship (Setemp), Secretariat for Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Sedecti) and Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy (SEC). The curatorship is by the CEO of Associação Zagaia Amazônia, Rozana Trilha, with an expographic project by designer Sérgio J. Matos and art by graffiti artist Raiz Campos.
