Stage in Portugal is won by João Chianca and Caitlin Simmers – 03/17/2023 – Na Pinta do Surfe

Supertubos beach in Peniche – Portugal hosted the third stage of the world surfing circuit. The peak always produces high waves and this year was no different.

By adjusting the days available for the event, the WSL once again rewarded all the work involved. There were days of high waves and incredible competition.

The Brazilian João Chianca (Chumbinho) surfed a lot throughout the event and did not give a chance in the final to the Australian Jack Robinson who has been standing out and is the current leader of the ranking. Chumbinho abused the tubes and with each wave surfed it was possible to feel that it would be difficult to take the title from him.

Chumbinho got his first victory in the world surfing elite and it was beautiful to see his celebration. Despite his always calm appearance and connected with life, Chumbinho exploded with emotion with this achievement. Carried to the podium, he was in ecstasy, and it’s no wonder, it’s a long walk for a surfer to conquer a stage on the dreamed “circuit of dreams”.

João entered Brazilian Storm history for good. It is impressive how Brazil has conquered a prominent place in the world of waves. We will see from now on the exchange of talents. Adriano de Souza retired from competitions and in the sequence João appears and so we continue the work of years and years developed by Brazilian surfers.

The Brazilian dominance draws attention and we need to be aware because the gringos are furious about it. Jack Robinson leads the circuit and is the hope of the Australians to take the title this year, Australia has not celebrated a world title for 10 years.

There are only two rounds left before the classification cuts, João Chianca with this victory practically guarantees his participation in the second phase of the world championship.

Samuel Pupo stopped in the quarterfinals but had a beautiful participation and is maturing at each stage.

Yago Dora, with powerful surf and good tubes, made it to the semifinals, he’s been showing that he’s here to stay.

Filipe Toledo lost round too soon of the 32, even with this result he occupies third place in the overall ranking.

Gabriel Medina, Ítalo Ferreira and Caio Ibelli stayed in round 16.

The highlight in the female category was Caitlin Simmers, 16 years old. The American rose to second place in the overall ranking.

The Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Weeb stopped only in the semifinal and went from ninth to fifth overall.

Now there are two stages left before the first cut, Bells Beach from the 4th to the 14th of April and Margaret River from the 20th to the 30th of April, both in Australia.

We are going to follow these next steps closely because the circuit is amazing and with a very high level.

aloha
