Secretary maintains root Bolsonarism in Tarcísio management – 03/25/2023 – Politics

To an auditorium with a dwindling audience at the Memorial da América Latina, singer and anti-abortion activist Zezé Luz presents herself as the mother of two daughters, of which “one is in heaven” due to an abortion provoked decades ago after a pregnancy caused by rape .

“I fight against the practice of abortion, for being what it is, the murder of a helpless, innocent human being. I respect those who think differently, but I know the pain, the traumas and everything I went through having that abortion”, he says, before adding a song in which he says he was only there because someone “let me be born, didn’t think about killing me”.

On stage, next to Zezé, is the state secretary of Politics for Women, Sonaira Fernandes (Republicans). She is the organizer of the event Una-se Mulher, which had among the guests activists known for positions contrary to abortion even in cases provided for by law.

At a time when the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), is criticized by part of the base for measures such as sanctioning medical marijuana or for giving too much space to the group of Gilberto Kassab (PSD), Sonaira, anti-feminist and anti-abortion , keeps the so-called root Bolsonarism alive in the government.

On the networks, she disagrees with the governor for taking a position on the most varied subjects that mobilize the radicalized base of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Sonaira’s portfolio had a moment of visibility last week, when Una-se Mulher was held. The event was highlighted by the participation of federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who recalled her career as an employee of his office after working together in the Federal Police.

Sonaira’s rise in politics was a bet by the Bolsonaro family and, as a São Paulo city councilor elected in 2020, she did not disappoint her godparents. She presented projects against anti-Covid masks and the discussion of sex in schools.

Upon assuming the position in Tarcísio’s management, she went so far as to say that the work would have an “extremely different” dimension. For now, Sonaira remains Sonaira as usual.

She had her most controversial moment in management with a publication about health, when she shared on her social networks questioning the importance of wearing masks against Covid-19.

For political scientist Maria do Socorro Braga, from UFSCar, Sonaira’s performance contemplates the Bolsonarist bubble.

“It’s like he [Tarcísio] I would have left this movement to her in order to meet the demands of the Bolsonarist segment that feels uncontemplated”, he says. “One is having a more generalist performance, after all he was elected by a larger electorate than Bolsonarism. She would act for a specific group”, he adds.

Sonaira’s stance is praised by Bolsonarist state deputies. Valéria Bolsonaro (PL) defines Sonaira as an “example of a woman”. “In less than three months, autonomy is already visible [com] which she presents herself and how she seeks to take the symbolism of women throughout the state”, he said.

Gil Diniz (PL) says that she is a “phenomenon” and defends the action against abortion in the government.

“It is a priority agenda. If any secretary does not defend life from its conception, I believe he is in the wrong place. I believe that everyone defends this agenda of life. It is an agenda dear to Sonaira, to me, to Eduardo Bolsonaro, to President Bolsonaro and the governor as well,” he said.

Tarcísio has already declared himself against abortion, but during the election he promised to comply with the legislation on the subject. Interruption of pregnancy is authorized in three cases: pregnancy resulting from rape, risk to the woman’s life and fetal anencephaly.

At Una-se Mulher, activists from the self-styled pro-life movement were present, groups in general in favor of the so-called “Statute of the Unborn Child”, which aims to restrict legal abortions.

In addition to Zezé Luz, the speaker was Rose Santiago, from Cervi (Center for Restructuring for Life), who was a candidate for federal deputy for the PRTB, with the name Rose do Cervi, Pro Vida. She was not elected.

With a more subtle approach than that of the singer, Santiago reported on women assisted by the entity who decided not to have an abortion or who, as he often repeats, chose life. In the lecture, the possibility of a partnership in the secretariat’s policies was mentioned.

In the lobby of the Memorial, there was a Cervi booth with brochures for pregnant women. Sonaira even posed holding a doll of a fetus next to an entity banner.

The posture of the secretary, who before taking office even held a vigil in front of a hospital that performs legal abortions, is criticized by the opposition.

“Sonaira at the head of the Women’s Secretariat is an attack on women’s rights and a signal from Tarcísio to the most ideological wing of Bolsonarism”, says deputy Paula Nunes, from the Feminist Banquet (PSOL).

“We will fight for hospitals in the state to continue performing and being a reference in legal abortion. The secretary’s ideological orientation, religious fundamentalist and anti-feminist, cannot be the tone of the policy for women.”

Political scientist Hannah Maruci, director of A Tenda das Candidadas, which trains women leaders in electoral politics, says that it is the ministry’s role to inform women about their rights —and legal abortion is one of them. Militancy against the issue within the structure of the government would go in the opposite direction.

“Acting in this direction is problematic because it puts women’s rights at risk. The secretariat aims to expand access to public policies and create policies in areas that are not being covered”, she says.

The report sought Sonaira’s portfolio and the government. In a note, the management stated that the secretariat “acts with the purpose of strengthening and expanding public policies that ensure the fullness of women’s rights”.

“The aforementioned event offers a broad program aimed at promoting dignity, women’s health and professional qualification”, says the government.

According to the note, the event attended more than a thousand women and was attended by members of civil society, Legislative and Executive.
