Flamengo and São Paulo play the first match of the Copa do Brasil final this Sunday (17), at Maracanã (RJ). Tricolor is trying for an unprecedented title in the competition, and Rubro-negro is looking for its fifth victory, in addition to a second consecutive championship.
The clubs have faced each other only four times in the history of the Copa do Brasil: twice in the quarterfinals in 2020, and twice in the semifinals in 2022.
Remember the clashes between São Paulo and Flamengo for the Copa do Brasil
Quarter finals – 2020
In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the clubs faced each other behind closed doors to the public. The first game was in Rio de Janeiro.
That season, Flamengo was trying to regain the shine it had shown in 2019. Coach Rogério Ceni trained the Rio team and Fernando Diniz commanded the Tricolor team.
- Outbound: 11/11, Flamengo 1 x 2 São Paulo
Without fans at Maracanã, Flamengo dominated the first half, but all the big chances were saved by São Paulo goalkeeper Tiago Volpi. Gabigol had a goal disallowed before the break.
But, just two minutes into the final stage, Brenner opened the scoring for São Paulo. In the next minute, Flamengo equalized with Gabigol.
Remember goalkeeper Hugo? He came on to replace Diego Alves, who was injured, and decided to try to dribble past striker Brenner, who stole the ball in the small area to score his second goal of the game, in the 42nd minute.
- Return: 11/18, São Paulo 3 x 0 Flamengo
In a Morumbi still empty due to the pandemic, São Paulo opened 2-0 with Luciano, who scored twice. Flamengo had chances to recover, but Vitinho wasted a penalty; the striker, who cost more than 40 million reais to the Rio club’s coffers, isolated the ball over the goal.
To complete the result, Pablo made a great move, dribbled past goalkeeper Hugo and completed the 3-0 victory that guaranteed classification for Tricolor.
Semifinal – 2022
The year 2022 marked the first season with the calendar back to normal after the pandemic. The first match between the clubs in the Copa do Brasil was at Morumbi, and the return match was at Maracanã.
Dorival Júnior’s Flamengo, who currently coaches Tricolor, would win the Copa do Brasil and the Libertadores. Rogério Ceni’s São Paulo only managed two runner-up finishes this season (Paulistão and Sul-Americana).
- Departure: 24/08, São Paulo 1 x 3 Flamengo
An incisive Flamengo that managed to get Gabigol and Pedro to play together in attack: Dorival Júnior’s team took the lead in the 11th minute of the game, with a header from midfielder João Gomes. Gabigol increased the red-blacks’ advantage in the second half.
Rodrigo Nestor, who should be a starter in next Sunday’s duel, scored for São Paulo at the end of the match. But, in the 48th minute of the second half, Everton Cebolinha shot from long distance and managed to increase the Cariocas’ advantage for the return game.
- Return: 14/09, Flamengo 1 x 0 São Paulo
In the second match, Flamengo managed the advantage built in the first match and even managed to increase it, at 36 in the first half, with Arrascaeta. The 1-0 victory in Rio de Janeiro confirmed the Flamengo fans in the decision against Corinthians, which would be won by Dorival’s team.
