Pre-COP30: 2nd Sociobioeconomy Workshop in Amapá is held to boost sustainable development

The Government of the State of Amapá held this Tuesday, 15th, the 2nd Sociobioeconomics Workshop, in the auditorium of the National Commerce Learning Service (Senac), in Macapá. The objective is to promote sustainable development among family farmers and traditional communities.

The workshop brought together experts to discuss opportunities for sustainable economic growth, both in rural and urban areas, with a focus on the responsible use of natural resources. Among the topics covered, the importance of local production chains stood out, seen as fundamental to strengthening the bioeconomy in the state.

“This is a meeting to exchange information that has already been produced, highlighting the incredible production chains we have, such as açaí and the forestry sector. We want to promote sustainable and ethical businesses, with companies that come from abroad and those that are being formed here in Amapá. The plan will bring different solutions for the future and we hope to reach COP30 making a difference”highlighted the governor, Clécio Luís.

The forecast is that all planning will be completed by November 2025, to be presented at the 30th UN Conference on Climate Change, which will take place in Belém, Pará. The document is being developed by ten bodies and departments of the State Government, with support from the Governors’ Climate and Forestry Task Force, the United States Agency for International Development, and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture.

“With a series of interviews, we were able to provide a preliminary diagnosis of the production chains and identify their main potential. We are listening directly to those at the production base and understanding the dynamics and challenges of each region. This active listening is an important step to ensure that the policy we are developing is not only effective, but also inclusive and representative of the voices of civil society, associations and cooperatives”explained the Secretary of State for the Environment, Taísa Mendonça.

The project director of the Governors’ Task Force, which provides the basis for cooperation on issues related to climate policy, Colleen Scanlan Lyonspointed out that the event represents another step in a journey towards the sustainable development of the state, with COP30 in mind.

“Here in Amapá there is a lot of political commitment to economic and social development. I was impressed by the delegation of secretaries and businesspeople from Amapá at COP28. Development starts with people. Planning is fundamental to this, understanding the different realities, the good and the challenging”reinforced Colleen.

According to the technical coordinator of the Sociobioeconomy Extension project in Amapá, Elimar Pinheirothe importance of discussions on the topic in the state will boost the local, urban and interior economy.

“We want Amapá to show the world our innovative solutions in the area of bioeconomy. We have a global environmental responsibility and, at the same time, an opportunity to generate sustainable businesses that respect the environment and promote the well-being of our populations. We are building a path that combines tradition and modernity, valuing people and natural resources. This is the future we want to see, and I believe we are on the right path.”highlighted the researcher.
