Podcast: spending on bets and the government’s reaction – Folha – 09/30/2024 – Podcasts

The Lula (PT) government is expected to present new regulatory measures for the online sports betting market this week. The movement comes in reaction to a Central Bank report released last week, which showed that Brazilians’ spending on so-called bets is in the order of R$20 billion per month.

Among the proposals is to ban the use of the Bolsa Família card for betting — beneficiaries of the program spent R$3 billion on them in August alone. Minister Fernando Haddad (Finance) compared the current scenario to chaos and said that the government’s actions will now be to bring order, combating money laundering, encouraging the treatment of addiction and regulating advertising on these platforms.

Members of the Treasury itself and the sector ask for clarification on the BC survey, but the movement taking place in the political world is an inflection in relation to what was recently approved.

This Monday’s Café da Manhã (30) talks about the impacts that betting can have on the Brazilian economy. The reporter from Sheet in Brasília Fábio Pupo tells what the numbers released by the Central Bank suggest, discusses the present and future impacts of online betting and discusses how the government and Congress have looked at this.
