Paralympic athletes receive support from the City of Macapá to compete in the Brazilian Championship in São Paulo – News of Brazil

A City Hall of Macapá prioritizes Education and Sport, understanding the importance of these axes in the training and development of individuals. Thus, the municipality guaranteed support with the purchase of airline tickets for a group of para-athletes that are part of the project “Jogos Paradesportivo Escolar”, of the Municipal Education Department (Semed).

The team is engaged in training that takes place on the athletics track at the Federal University of Amapá (Unifap). Their performance was closely monitored by the Coordinator of the Brazilian Paralympic Reference Center in the municipality, Marlon Gomes, this Friday (17).

On the occasion, the coordinator highlighted the team’s dedication in preparing for the Brazilian Parathletics Championship and spoke of the support of the City of Macapá, which makes it possible for people from Amapa to compete nationwide.

Luziwania Oliveira, one of those responsible for the project, said she was confident in the para-athlete team. “They are record holders in medals and we are sure of the success of each one, in their modalities. Many of these achievements are due to the support that the project receives from the City of Macapá, in the person of the mayor, Dr. Furlan, who is a great supporter of para-athletics in the capital”, he commented.

An example is little Mariana Lourrane, 13 years old, a 5th grade student at the Sandra Tolosa da Silva Municipal School. She claims to have lessened her anxiety after joining the project. Lourrane competes in the shot put and slingshot. She has participated in championships in Brasília, Paraíba and São Paulo, and has already won 5 medals, 2 gold and 3 bronze.

“After I started athletics I feel much better. I’m optimistic. I am preparing for the next championship in São Paulo and I hope to bring more medals to my city”, she said.

Flávio Yuri, 16 years old, is the current Brazilian athletics champion. He talks about the City Hall’s support in purchasing tickets. “We were worried about not being able to travel, but everything worked out. We thank the project and the City Hall that supported us in this. I hope to reciprocate by bringing more medals.”

About the project

The project was authored by Semed’s Special Education Division, created in 2022. Initially, its target audience was children regularly enrolled in municipal schools in Macapá, aiming to encourage the practice of sports by people with physical, visual and intellectual disabilities. Currently, the project has expanded to reach para-athletes from all over the municipality.
