The FIFA Council decided this Tuesday (14) the format of the new Club World Cup, to be played from 2025 and thereafter, every four years. By the determined norms, Flamengo and Palmeiras are guaranteed in the first edition.
The resolution was approved during the organization’s congress, held in Kigali, Rwanda.
Confederations with more than four representatives will have the continental champions of the four previous editions. In addition to Palmeiras (2021 Libertadores champion) and Flamengo (2022), the 2023 and 2024 Libertadores winners will also qualify for the new competition.
The information was revealed by GloboEsporte.com and later confirmed by FIFA.
Additional teams will be resolved by a ranking spanning the same four-year period. Conmebol will be entitled to send six clubs.
The highest number will be from Uefa: 12. By the same criteria, Chelsea (2021 Champions League winner) and Real Madrid (2022) are guaranteed.
Confederations with four places will send their continental champions and those with fewer places will choose the best ranked teams among the last four winners of the most important local competition.
The host country will also be entitled to have a representative.
In the event that the same club wins the Libertadores or Champions League twice or more, a ranking will have to be drawn up with sporting criteria to define the other classifieds.
FIFA has determined that the maximum allowed will be two teams from each country, unless a third (or fourth) also wins the continent’s main tournament between 2021-2024. The last two Libertadores had exclusively Brazilian finals. Of the last 10 champions, six were from the country.
The last edition of the World Cup in the current format will refer to the current season, possibly played at the end of this year. As the confederations pressured Fifa to have an intercontinental competition next year, the organization will hold one in which the Champions League champion will play against the winner of playoffs involving teams from other confederations.
