Born in Macapá and today a citizen of the world, the restless Cleonice Pacheco Weidlich, known as Cléo, gained this foreign surname when she married a German, but today she is based in the United States. And it was the American passport that must have helped open the doors to an old dream as a climber: conquering all 14 peaks greater than 8 thousand meters.

The biggest and most famous of them was won in the spring of 2010, when she reached Everest, with its 8,848 meters, becoming one of the first Brazilians to accomplish the feat.

In fact, Cléo wanted to go even further when she conquered Everest and launched a ‘double-header’, by also trying to climb Mount Lhotse (8516m), but without a summit.

Emphasis – But the amapaense Cléo Pacheco went through difficulties until the recognition of her accomplishments, even as an “American citizen”. According to blogger and climber Pedro Hauck, one of the first to believe – and credit – her great achievements. “Until then, nobody knew she was Brazilian, not even me. But since I identified myself as Brazilian, she replied in Portuguese. That’s when the – then unknown – Cleo started to be noticed in Brazil, after I had published articles about her”, says the Brazilian journalist.
