The already famous “food halls” in New York, which are a kind of food court with more gastronomic restaurants, should gain another brother in the coming months: Market 57, at Pier 57 in Hudson River Park.

The new space will host 15 businesses run exclusively by women, blacks and indigenous people, curated by the James Beard Foundation. The entity, one of the most respected in American gastronomy, is also known for its awards for restaurants, chefs and authors, among others.

In addition to curating the kiosks, the foundation will also operate two proprietary spaces at Market 57. “Good to Go by JBF” will function as an incubator where new talent takes turns in the kitchen; the “PLATFORM by JBF” will be an educational space and a showcase kitchen, hosting chef residencies, gastronomic experiences and a rich program of arts, cuisine and events.

“New York is teeming with a huge variety of cultures, traditions and culinary influences, and Market 57’s businesses reflect that diversity,” explained Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation, whose impact programs have helped educate many of the tenants of the new venture.

“We are happy to bring delicious food to the west side of the city while supporting incredible talent that aligns with our mission.”

Among the options at Market 57 will be Ammi’s, which offers homemade Indian food; Bessou, with “a reinvented homemade Asian cuisine” and Malai, an ice cream shop that was born in Brooklyn and is successful with South Asia, inspired by the childhood of its founder, Pooja Bavishi, from Malaysia.

Still without a defined date, Market 57 should open its doors still in the spring of the northern hemisphere. More information at pier57nyc.com
