Recently sworn in as president of the STM (Superior Military Court), Air Lieutenant Brigadier Francisco Joseli Parente Camelo said this Thursday (16) that the challenge for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will be to pacify Brazil and consolidate definitively democracy in the country.

In her inauguration speech, Joseli praised the PT candidate, said that the president is committed to reducing the country’s inequality and stated that she does not see Brazil as divided, but as “a country that dreams of being great and fights to be great”. .

According to him, his performance in the court will require balance and serenity in the face of the situation that the country is going through and will be of “firm reaffirmation of our democracy”.

One of those present at Joseli’s inauguration was Lula himself, who made a gesture to the Armed Forces, the sector that was closest to the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government. His term will end in 2025.

The STM is the body responsible for prosecuting and judging military crimes provided for in the Military Penal Code, comprising 15 ministers, ten of them military and five civilians.

In addition to Lula, the president of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), Rosa Weber, and court ministers Dias Toffoli, Alexandre de Moraes, Edson Fachin and Ricardo Lewandowski were inaugurated.

Also participating in the event were the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), former President José Sarney, and the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias.

In the last inauguration of president of the STM, in August last year, Bolsonaro was not present. Next to the sworn in, Minister Lúcio Mário de Barros Góes, were the then President of the STF, Luiz Fux, and the then Minister of Defense, General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira.

In his speech at the ceremony, the Attorney General of Military Justice, Antônio Pereira Duarte, said that the presence of the authorities at this Thursday’s ceremony “already indicates that in addition to the personal prestige of those now sworn in, there is also unequivocal respect” for the STM.

Coming from the Air Force, Joseli Camelo, 69, was an official pilot for Lula in previous administrations and also for former president Dilma Rousseff (PT). He calculates that he has flown about 10 thousand hours in the 12 years in the Presidency.

Since 2015, he has been a minister of the Superior Military Court. The list of the 92 countries to which Joseli took Dilma and Lula is nailed to the wall that divides the minister’s office and the corridor on the 4th floor of the court.

A Sheet the minister has already said that he does not see Alexandre de Moraes’ decision to leave the judgment of the military involved in the January 8 coup attacks with the STF.

Even the gap that opens up for possible searches and seizures in military organizations did not worry the brigadier. “The Court’s decision needs to be fulfilled in any situation, right?”, he questioned, rhetorically.
