Moraes maintains arrest of woman who scratched STF statue on 8/1

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, denied the third request for freedom presented by the defense of hairdresser Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, aged 38, who is accused of writing “you lost, Mané”, on the “statue of Justice ” which is in front of the STF building, during the events of January 8th.

Deborah is arrested since March 17, 2023, when he was the target of the eighth phase of Operation Lesa Pátria, launched by the Federal Police. Débora has two children, one aged 10 and the other aged six.

The phrase scribbled by the hairdresser alludes to a phrase said by the president of the STF, Luís Roberto Barroso, after the 2022 election, in New York, to a Brazilian who questioned him about the Court’s political actions, mainly in relation to the former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The minister’s reaction was recorded.

Upon returning to Brazil, Barroso said he did not regret his speech and complained about the insults he received from Brazilians while he was in New York.

According to the hairdresser’s defense, she did not enter any public building.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) denounced Débora for armed criminal association, violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat, with the use of a flammable substance, against the Union’s assets and with considerable harm to the victim and deterioration of listed property.

Moraes’ denial of the third request for freedom filed by Débora’s defense was announced on Friday (27). In the decision, Moraes claimed that Débora presents “social danger”.

What the defense says

In a statement, lawyer Helio Júnior, responsible for Débora’s defense, said that Moraes’ decision was received “with deep indignation”.

“It is with deep indignation that we come to the public to denounce the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who denied Débora’s release. This determination represents a serious violation of human rights and reflects clear political persecution”, says an excerpt from the note.

According to the lawyer, Moraes keeps the hairdresser in prison for “pure perversity”.

“Débora is not a criminal, but a dedicated mother and an honest hairdresser without any criminal record. Understanding that she is a ‘dangerous’ woman is an attempt by the system to silence her and perpetuate injustice,” he said.

“Currently, Débora is facing the pain of separation from her children and the weight of a system devoid of empathy. Her arrest violates the democratic rule of law and highlights the perverse relationship between politics and justice. This decision that kept Débora imprisoned will be appealed and We hope that justice will be restored”, added the lawyer.
