Maria Rita opens songbook with work by Paulo André and Ruy Barata, composers from ‘a country called Pará’

The authors’ main performer, Fafá de Belém sings two of the 22 songs on the double album that brings together Mônica Salmaso, Leila Pinheiro, Joyce Moreno, Zeca Pagodinho, Dona Onete, Pinduca and Zé Renato. Maria Rita is the performer of the bolero ‘Foi assim’, the biggest hit by the duo of composers from Pará Paulo André Barata and Ruy Barata Renato Nascimento / Disclosure ♪ Born in Santarém (PA), Ruy Guilherme Paranatinga Barata (June 25, 1920 – 23 April 1990) was a lawyer, historian, teacher and politician. But it was as a poet and composer – partner of his son, also a composer, Paulo André Barata, born in Belém (PA) on September 25, 1946 – that Ruy went beyond the borders of Pará by having songs propagated on a national scale in the voice of Fafá de Belém. It was in the warm voice of this country singer that Brazil discovered songs like Este rio é minha rua (1976), Indauê – Tupã (1976), Baiuca’s bar (1978) and – above all – the bolero Foi assim (1977) and the song Pauapixuna (1977), hits from Fafá’s second album, Água (1977). It is only natural, therefore, that Fafá has a double presence on the double album A Música de Paulo André & Ruy Barata by great interpreters of Brazilian music, a project orchestrated under the direction of Tito Barata. Fafá sings two of the 22 songs that make up the repertoire of this phonographic tribute that the record label Biscoito Fino releases into the world on Thursday, September 21st, initially only in a digital edition, but with a double CD edition scheduled to hit the market in last quarter of 2023. Fafá sings Porto Caribe and Tronco submerso, two songs presented on record in the voice of Paulo André Barata himself on the album Uirapuru – O canto da Amazônia (1997). In the lyrics of Porto Caribe, a lively Latin song, Ruy Barata proudly reiterates his Amazonian origins in the verse “I am from a country called Pará”. Fafá de Belém sings ‘Porto Caribe’ and ‘Tronco submerso’ on the album ‘The music of Paulo André and Ruy Barata by great interpreters of Brazilian music’ Aryanne Almeida / Disclosure That’s why the team of tribute performers – recorded with musical production by José Milton (present as a performer on the track Urgente) and with arrangements divided between Cristóvão Bastos, Jacinto Kahwage, Luiz Pardal and Rildo Hora – comes predominantly from the Amazon nation. In addition to Fafá, the album’s cast includes Arthur Espíndola (Pacará), Dona Onete (Este rio é minha rua), Jane Duboc (Nativo), Leila Pinheiro (Mesa de bar), Lia Sophia (Baiuca’s bar), Lucinnha Bastos (Enchente amazon), Pinduca (This river is my street, with Dona Onete) and Vital Lima (Nativo, with Jane Duboc). However, the two biggest hits of father and son as composers gained the voices of two singers from São Paulo. Maria Rita opens disc 1 with a recording of the bolero Foi assim. Mônica Salmaso opens disc 2 with a delicate recording by Pauapixuna. Interpreters from other states in Brazil were also invited. Áurea Martins, from Rio de Janeiro, sings Bela fatal, a partnership between the composer duo and Antonio Adolfo, also from Rio. Coming from Rio’s experience, Zé Renato dives into the Amazon, my river. Joyce Moreno, from Rio, joins the Rio Quarteto to revitalize Old Frame. Father Fábio de Mello, from Minas Gerais, gives voice to Litania while Zeca Pagodinho performs Meu Pajé (Samba for Sting).
