Lula legitimizes dictatorship by welcoming Maduro, says Guaidó – 05/29/2023 – Panel

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó, 39, tells the Panel that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) seeks to “whiten” (legitimize) the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro by receiving him with honors as head of state in Brasilia.

“What Lula does is legitimize a dictator in practice. Worse still, he revictimizes the whole of Venezuelan society,” he said, who proclaimed himself interim president and was recognized by dozens of countries, including Brazil under Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Called an imposter by Lula, Guaidó said that the attack was not restricted to him.

“What Lula is doing by attacking me is relativizing the tragedy that Venezuela is suffering,” he declared, speaking from the US, where he was based after leaving the country citing security reasons.

As mr. Did you see Maduro’s visit to Brazil and the meeting with President Lula? President Lula makes his decisions, and his priority is the international agenda. I regret that the rapprochement with Maduro and Venezuela is not a search for solutions to the conflict. There is still a possibility of an agreement mediated by Mexico.

And there was no mention of the Amazon, which President Lula cited so much during his campaign, or the presence of AK-47s, certainly Russian, on the border with Roraima. Neither the gold trade, among other things, on the border, nor the presence of thousands of Venezuelans who are the product of forced displacement.

He dedicated himself to attacking me, and it was not an attack on Juan Guaidó, but an attack on the struggle for democracy, for free elections, and for respect for victims of human rights violations.

The president called Mr. of impostor. Lula called me an imposter to avoid talking about the need for free elections in Venezuela, or that Maduro commits crimes against humanity. Lula revictimizes the entire Venezuelan society. Michelle Bachelet [ex-comissária da ONU para direitos humanos] said that there were systematic violations of human rights in Venezuela. Human Rights Watch spoke of the displaced. This is therefore not an opinion of Juan Guaidó. What Lula is doing by attacking me is to relativize the tragedy that Venezuela is suffering, to legitimize a dictatorship, regrettably.

Does Maduro’s presence at the meeting with South American presidents show that he is no longer isolated? It shows that the invitation he received from Lula marks a very clear geopolitical agenda in Brazil, which is not part of democracy. But beyond the pretense of the gesture, it is very worrying for 7.5 million refugees, for tens of thousands of victims of Maduro’s repression. This is not just reaching out to a dictator, but destabilizing the region. Operation Acolhida received hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans displaced by the tragedy in Venezuela. This is not a narrative as President Lula said, it is not an invention. It is not relativizable. It’s a fact.

Mr. Do you expect South American presidents to hold Maduro accountable for the human rights situation at the summit? The least we expect is that they talk about the victims and the rights of political prisoners, Venezuelan migrants and the solution to the conflict, which involves free and fair elections. We don’t want any gifts, that’s all.

How does this visit impact the negotiations for the political transition? Mature gets stronger? We have to keep fighting for free elections in Venezuela, to get out of a dictatorship, understanding that the president of Brazil is undoubtedly a reference in the region. Today he is on the side of repression, human rights violations and not the victims and people who are fighting on the ground for democracy. I ask Lula if, in addition to receiving the dictator and attacking me, he is going to talk about democracy, about solutions to the conflict in Venezuela.

where mr. is now? I am, precisely because of the persecution of the Maduro dictatorship in the USA.

What are your next steps? The idea is to return to Venezuela when it is safe, but today unfortunately it is not. We will be on an international tour demanding the rights that Venezuelans deserve since 2018 [data da última eleição de Maduro, amplamente considerada fraudulenta pela comunidade internacional].
