Lula government is positive for 32% of Brazilians and negative for 31%
For the first time since June 2023, the positive assessment of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) government does not appear numerically ahead in the Genial/Quaest survey.
In the survey released on Wednesday (2), the PT administration appears positively evaluated by 32% while 33% responded that they classify it as regular.
For 31%, the assessment is negative. 4% did not know or did not respond.
In relation to the most recent previous survey, in July, the positive assessment fluctuated negatively by four percentage points.
The group that considers federal management to be regular changed positively by three percentage points, while the negative assessment fluctuated one percentage point upwards.
The variations occurred within the survey’s margin of error of two percentage points.
The survey also shows that approval of Lula’s work fluctuated negatively by three percentage points, to 51%.
According to Quaest, the highest rate the president reached in this third term was 60%, in August last year. Disapproval went from 43% to 45%, compared to the previous survey.
The negative variation in the perception of Lula was driven by adults (from 56% to 51%), voters aged 60 or over (from 59% to 49%), people with higher education (from 59% to 51%) and the portion of the population that earns up to 2 minimum wages (from 69% to 62%).
The economic situation worsened in the last twelve months for 41% of respondents (36% in July), improved for 33% (compared to 28%) and remained the same for 22% (compared to 32%). In the same period, the purchasing power of Brazilians decreased to 61%, increased to 18% and remained the same at 15%.
For the next 12 months, 45% of the population expects the economy to improve (52% in July). 36% expect it to get worse (27% in July) and 18% do not believe in a change in the economic outlook (same rate as in the previous survey).
Even though the survey indicates a general negative variation in the population’s perception of the government, 43% of those interviewed believe that the country is in the right direction — two percentage points above the July result. Another 47% think the opposite.
There was also an improvement in the percentage of interviewees who said they received more positive news about the PT administration (from 30% to 38%), while the percentage of those who answered the opposite went from 41% to 38%, and 20% said they had not heard news.
Leading the way in positive news are the government’s social programs: Pé de Meia (19%), Bolsa Família (14%) and Desenrola (10%).
Quaest interviewed 2,000 voters aged 16 and over between the 25th and 29th of September. The confidence index is 95%.
