Lula criticizes the dollar and defends Venezuela in the Brics during Maduro’s visit

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) took advantage of the visit of the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro, to Brazil this Tuesday (29) to criticize the dollar as the world’s main commercial currency. In addition, the PT took the opportunity to indicate support for Venezuela’s entry into the Brics bloc, which includes Russia, India, China and South Africa in addition to Brazil.

“I cannot say that I never thought and that I never dreamed that we could trade with our own currencies. I dream that we have our currency so that we can do business without having to depend on the dollar. there is a country, there is a machine to roll the dollar. I dream that the Brics can have a currency, just as the European Union built the euro”, said Lula.

The PT also stated that the dictator Maduro is unable to pay for his exports due to the sanctions imposed by the United States. According to the Brazilian president, the international blockades “are worse than a war”.

“Is it[Maduro’s]fault?, no. It’s the fault of the United States, which carried out an extremely exaggerated blockade. I always think that the blockade is worse than a war. Usually in war the soldier who is in battle dies, but the blockade kills children, kills women, kills people who have nothing to do with the ideological dispute at stake,” added Lula.

Lula also defended that Venezuela join the Brics, in case there is a formal request by the neighboring country. “If you ask my will, I’m in favor of it,” said the Brazilian. The petista, however, stated that the next summit of the bloc will be his first after several years. And that, if there is an official request from Venezuela, it will be officially taken and the bloc will deliberate.

Along the same lines, Maduro said that the Brics are the “magnet of those who want a different world”. “If you ask Venezuela: ‘Do you aspire to be with the Brics one day?’ Yes. We want to be part of the Brics, not in a modest way, but to be part of the Brics and accompany the construction of this new architecture, this new global geopolitics, this new world that is ahead of us”, said Nicolás Maduro.

The Venezuelan dictator also stated that the Brics bloc has become a space for discussing a new architecture of world geopolitics. Maduro also extolled that several countries want to join the Bank of the Brics, citing in particular an alleged interest from Saudi Arabia, and emphasized the presence of former president Dilma Rousseff in charge of the financial institution.

“It is one of the topics we talked about the role of the Brics and their emergence in the face of the new global geopolitics. It is a geopolitics that has emerged from this conflict resolution and that will bring new designs to the world. Which brings, therefore, new poles, centers of political, economic, social, cultural and military power. This world that is being designed and that can bring a united South America”, added Maduro.
