With the aim of increasing visibility regarding migrants and refugees present in Amazonian cities, the Regional Labor Court of the 8th Region, with jurisdiction in the states of Pará and Amapá, will hold until October 22nd the training course “Socioproductive Inclusion of Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants of Greater Belém”. Classes take place at the TRT-8 Training School, and are promoted by the Regional Committee of the National Program to Combat Slave Labor and Human Trafficking and to Protect Migrant Labor.

One of the coordinators of the TRT-8 Regional Committee, the judge Sergio Rocha highlighted the importance of action to consolidate the social rights of migrants: “Our court has demonstrated over the years a persistent commitment to combating slave labor and protecting social rights, and could not avoid this initiative to collaborate with training with the support of the Federal University of Pará, through of the Clinic to Combat Slave Labor, and the Public Ministry of Labor, which are our institutional partners, to provide this training for this community that needs to be seen and served by all of us.”

The course classes started on Monday afternoon (14) and the first topic was the responsibility of the teacher Valena Jacob, coordinator of the Clinic to Combat Slave Labor, at UFPA. Speaking about human trafficking and slavery in Brazil, the professor gave an overview of the historical reality of Brazil, as well as the country’s legal bases, to an audience made up of migrants and refugees from countries such as Venezuela and Haiti. Valena talks about the importance of taking the course, “in addition to enabling their knowledge of labor and social rights in general, which they are unaware of, it is also a way for them to be multipliers of this knowledge to other people, migrant workers with whom they have contact. With this action, the TRT-8 allows broad access to the Judiciary for these people, because this – access to the Judiciary – also occurs fully through training in knowledge of workers’ rights”reinforces the CCTE/UFPA coordinator.

The event is promoted by the Regional Committee of the National Program to Combat Slave Labor and Human Trafficking and Protection of Migrant Labor, of the Regional Labor Court of the 8th Region, in partnership with the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT).

Held in the auditorium of the Itair Sá da Silva Training and Improvement School (Ecaiss), located in the TRT-8 headquarters building, the program continues until the 22nd, covering topics such as labor rights in the Brazilian legal system; international protection of migrants and refugees; migration regularization, among others.
