Joyce Ribeiro will be appointed ambassador of Cidade Velha – 10/02/2024 – Mônica Bergamo

TV Cultura presenter Joyce Ribeiro will be named ambassador in Brazil for the city of Ribeira Grande, in Cape Verde. Better known as Cidade Velha, the region was listed as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

A ceremony at the Portuguese Language Museum, in the capital of São Paulo, will make his nomination official on the 8th of this month. The ceremony will be attended by Cape Verde’s ambassador to Brazil, José Pedro Máximo Chantre D’Oliveira, the country’s consul Emmanuel Jean-Baptiste da Silva Rocha and the president of TV Cultura, José Roberto Maluf.

“The appointment as ambassador of Cidade Velha further strengthens the bonds of friendship and efforts to carry out countless projects that unite our Brazilian writers, artists and filmmakers with their African brothers”, says Joyce.

Often described by authorities in the Cape Verde archipelago as the “cradle of the Cape Verdean nation”, the city was the first urban agglomeration built by the Portuguese in the tropics region, in 1462, two years after they arrived and began to populate the set of islands.

It was also the first capital of Cape Verde — until it lost its position to the city of Praia, also on the island of Santiago.

The region was initially named Ribeira Grande and, throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, was used as a warehouse for the Atlantic slave trade. There, ships with men and women captured off the coast of Africa stopped to refuel until they could continue their journey to Europe or America.

The urban buildings were built by captive labor and, among the few that remain standing, is the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, where the Jesuit priest António Vieira (1608-1697) preached.
