Westminster Abbey, in London, said that visitors will be able to retrace the route of the coronation of King Charles III, having access for the first time to an area previously restricted to the public. Charles will be crowned on May 6 in the church, which is the same church where the coronations of English and British monarchs have been held for a thousand years.

As part of the official tours that will take place in the weeks following the coronation, visitors to the abbey will be able to walk —after removing their shoes— on the cosmatesque floor, a type of mosaic floor, next to the altar where the coronation chair will be positioned for the event. .

“For the first time in history, this floor will be displayed and used for the coronation,” said Vanessa Simeoni, the abbey’s chief conservator. “It’s a very rare opportunity. Nobody but the clergy rises to this place.”

The mosaic floor, composed of marble, stone, glass and metal, was made on the orders of King Henry III in 1268 and is the only one of its kind in Britain, Simeoni said. But it reached such a poor state of preservation that it was hidden under a carpet since 1870, until it underwent restoration work that ended in 2010.
