Haddad wants to revoke the injunction that allowed accredited bets in Rio
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said that the government must be able to overturn the injunction granted by the Federal Court of the Federal District that authorized bets accredited in Rio de Janeiro and operating throughout Brazil. According to the minister, “it doesn’t make sense for a state to have a federal lottery”.
“I believe that we will be able to overturn the injunction because it doesn’t make much sense for a state to have a national lottery, it has a state one. There is even legal provision. There is case law on this matter. If you have national action in each state, then you will really create a situation that is not in line with the constitutional text”, Haddad told journalists, this Tuesday (1).
“The person has to be in Rio de Janeiro to play a virtual lottery in Rio de Janeiro, and not in the national territory”, he added.
Haddad’s statement was made moments after the announcement of the preliminary decision in favor of the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj).
According to the decision, the bets that have been operating in the state of Rio de Janeiro since April 2023 will be able to continue operating without risk of blockage, even if they are not accredited with the Union.
The judge on duty at the 8th Federal Civil Court, Antônio Cláudio Macedo da Silva, considered that the Ministry of Finance’s ordinances on the segment “exceed federal competence, invading the regulatory competence of the states”.
Also on Tuesday, the Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Regis Dudena, stated that the Attorney General’s Office (AGU) will provide the “necessary judicial response” to the federal judge’s injunction.
Government released a list of bets authorized in the country
Last night, the Prizes and Betting Secretariat (SPA), linked to the Ministry of Finance, released the list of bets authorized to operate legally in Brazil.
The list of authorized companies is available in the Betting Management System (Sigap). In all, 193 websites linked to 88 companies were authorized of betting in the country.
Companies that do not appear on the Treasury list can no longer operate betting in Brazil, until they obtain authorization from the government.
