Gymnastics: Brazil wins bronze at the World Cup – 03/18/2023 – Sport

The Brazilian rhythmic gymnastics team won this Saturday (18) the bronze medal in the general event of the Athens stage of the World Cup in the category.

The mark is unprecedented: Brazil had already won medals in stages of the World Cup, but not in the general competition. This was also the first time that a team from a country outside of Europe and Asia won a medal in general events at World Cup stages.

The Brazilian ensemble, formed by Giovana Silva, Maria Eduarda Arakaki, Nicole Pírcio, Sofia Madeira and Victoria Borges, reached second place in the series of five arches –in a presentation to the sound of the song “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”, by Whitney Houston– and fourth in the mixed series, with a total of 63,850 points. Israel, with 65,450, and Bulgaria, with 64,700, completed the podium.

Luciene Resende, president of the CBG (Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation), stated that, “if anyone had doubts, now there is none: Brazil has officially entered the international elite in rhythmic gymnastics”.

“I was a coach and I always dreamed of this day. A few years ago, that dream seemed like a delusion, because the distance that separated us from the great powers was very great. But we worked hard, we structured ourselves, we built a true dream team and today we are there , competing as equals at the highest level.”
