Government announces 20 million fewer poor people by December – 05/28/2023 – Panel

The government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) hopes to announce in the second half of the year a symbolic figure for the reduction of extreme poverty in the country.

According to the calculations of the Ministry of Social Development, it will be possible to remove 8.5 million families from this situation in the coming months, or something around 20 million people.

“This is already the result of the resumption of Bolsa Família and the new benefits provided for in the program”, says Minister Wellington Dias.

The program, reissued by Lula, provides for a minimum of BRL 600 per family, in addition to BRL 150 per child up to 6 years of age and BRL 50 per child or teenager.

Today, the government estimate is that 62 million people live below the poverty line. “Obviously, to eradicate poverty completely, it is necessary to combine social policies with job creation and promotion of entrepreneurship”, stated Dias.

The figures for the reduction in the number of poor people should be exploited by Lula to increase the pressure to reduce the interest rate, with the argument that the pace of improvement in the living conditions of the population could be much faster.
