Former federal deputy David Miranda (PDT-RJ) died, this Monday morning (9), due to a generalized infection in the gastrointestinal system. He was 37 years old and had been hospitalized for nine months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

Miranda was married to journalist Glenn Greenwald, who reported the death on social media. “He died in complete peace, surrounded by our children, family and friends,” he said in the twitter.

David Miranda was a councilor in Rio de Janeiro between 2017 and 2019 and assumed the mandate of federal deputy after the then-elected Jean Wyllys decided not to take office that year.

The former parliamentarian was an activist for LGBT causes and coordinated the campaign for asylum to Edward Snowden in Brazil – the systems analyst made public details of various programs that make up the global surveillance system of the NSA, the National Security Agency of the United States.

Through social media, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) sympathized with the death and offered condolences to Miranda’s family. “A young man of extraordinary trajectory who left too soon,” he wrote.
