Finland opens registration for happiness classes – 03/20/2023 – World

Coming for the sixth consecutive year as champion of the World Happiness Report happiness ranking, whose 2023 edition was released this Monday (20) by the UN, Finland is launching a course to teach foreigners to be happy as their citizens are.

The “Masterclass of Happiness” will take place at a resort in the country in June 2023 and offers free tickets, accommodation and four days of classes to ten chosen by Business Finland, a government agency that also takes care of tourism in the country.

“The experience will bring together the lucky participants and expert trainers who will guide them towards a balanced lifestyle that will help you to be happy the Finnish way. The training covers four main themes: nature and lifestyle, health and balance, design and daily life and food and well-being”, says a statement on the website that is accepting applications —they can be made until April 2nd.

After registering, participants are invited to record a video that they will post on their own Instagram or TikTok account, using the hashtags #FindYourInnerFinn and #Visitfinland.

In an interview with Sheet, Business Finland’s marketing director, Heli Jimenez, said that the fact that her country has been number one in the ranking for so long is not a coincidence, but the result of specific work. “Happiness should be a political goal. Finland believes that joy, contentment and satisfaction don’t just happen. Building the necessary culture and social institutions gives people a framework on which to build their happiness,” she said.

“High levels of confidence and freedom help explain Finnish happiness,” continues Jimenez. “Finnish people tend to trust their neighbours, civil servants and the government. Both individuals and institutions enjoy high levels of freedom. Finland ranks highly in political, civil and press freedom.”

Asked whether Finland’s glacial cold – as well as that of its neighbors Denmark (2nd place in the ranking), Iceland (3rd), Sweden (6th) and Norway (7th) – could help explain such happiness, she disagrees.

“I would say that the correlation of weather conditions with the level of happiness is a coincidence. Finns are a warm nation, and we don’t consider cold weather a challenge, but a matter of wearing appropriate clothes. That said, the Finnish habit of diving into ice holes in the winter has been proven to have health benefits, which of course increases the level of happiness.”
