Restaurants and bars in São Paulo follow a long-standing custom of serving fixed dishes on each day of the week. On Mondays, for example, they offer Virado à Paulista, followed by tripe or rolê steak on Tuesdays, feijoada on Wednesdays, pasta on Thursdays and fish on Fridays. In many establishments, feijoada is also served on Saturdays.

One of the explanations for the feijoada being served on Wednesday is that its pork was an item that was left over and could last longer preserved to be repeated, says the gastronomy teacher.

“This ended up falling into people’s taste,” he adds. The dish of the day is also a habit in other Brazilian capitals, but on different dates. In Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, for example, feijoada is traditionally served on Fridays, the day closest to the weekend.

According to him, the dish is usually consumed on Fridays and Saturdays in places like samba schools, when there are celebrations, which may have helped to popularize the establishment of that date.

Despite the change of government of Tarcísio de Freitas, in the menus of restaurants and bars in São Paulo, the agenda remains the same.
