Expectations above reality are common in Brazilian football – 10/01/2024 – Tostão
On my vacation trip, I met Didi, who has had this nickname since he was young because he made curved passes, with the outside of his foot, imitating the master Didi, best player in the 1958 World Cup and one of the greatest midfielders of history.
Modric, with his trivela passes, must have seen films of Didi playing. Vinicius Junior, at Real Madrid, must have learned from Modric. When Vini dribbles and advances to the left, he usually makes trivela passes with the outside of his right foot, with the ball bypassing the defender and reaching the free teammate behind the marker.
I miss the selection of a midfielder, like Modric, Didi and others. The curve pass is a technical resource, beautiful, a special effect. Of course, it is not necessary to know how to hit the ball to be an ace in the position. Remembering Skank in the song “It’s a Football Match”, the midfield “is the place for the stars, who lead the whole team into the attack”.
If the current team, even playing poorly, beats Chile and Peru, two weak teams, I hope that the optimists, the good guys and the pachecões don’t get euphoric or think that the team has achieved the desired football, as this illusion will create an expectation above reality. for the following games.
In Brazil, all it takes is one failure or one brilliant moment to cause great discouragement or euphoria. Flamengo, after the beautiful and efficient football they showed in 2019, under the command of Jorge Jesus, lives with chronic expectations above reality, in addition to enormous pride — that they have great talent and that they will beat all their opponents, especially in the Maracanã. When frustration occurs, it’s the coach’s fault. Tite is the last victim.
Tite is a scientific, organized, balanced, rational, serious technician who has a great technical committee to help him. However, he is a predictable and repetitive trainer, as is the case with most other good trainers. When unforeseen events arise, they become confused, as they have to make quick and different decisions. It’s the coaches’ limitation.
Expectations above reality are a very present situation in Brazilian football. Cruzeiro, before the arrival of the new recruits, played well and had a great position in the table, as they are not a team with several highly prestigious players. When the new ones arrived, expectations were created above reality, as if they were great reinforcements. The only exceptional one of the new players is goalkeeper Cássio.
The others are good, but similar to those the team already had in their positions. The team got worse and the young coach Seabra was dismissed. In the 1-1 draw against Vasco, already under the command of Fernando Diniz, it was too early for there to be anything different.
In Cruzeiro’s goal in that match, with an excellent header from defender Zé Ivaldo, after Barreal’s great cross, a type of goal that happens millions of times in football, the narrator and commentator, to please or because they think that every goal is programmed, rehearsed, they said that the goal had already been scored, the new coach’s mark.
Worse than having exaggerated expectations is having expectations that are below reality, low self-esteem.
We need to dream, progress and fight for better things.
