Electrocardiogram for home use arrives in pharmacies – 09/29/2024 – Equilíbrio

The first electrocardiogram for home use arrived in Brazilian pharmacies. Called Complete, the product — developed by the Japanese multinational Omron Healthcare — was presented this year at the American and Brazilian cardiology congresses.

At Pague Menos, Sinete, Extrafarma, São Paulo and Pacheco drugstores the device costs around R$1,500.

The equipment performs the electrocardiogram and measures blood pressure at the same time. Easy to use, it can be used by anyone. The result, which is not a report, is transmitted to the doctor in around 30 seconds. To do this, you need to download the application.

The inspiration for creating the device came from a guideline from the European Society of Cardiology on Atrial Fibrillation, which recommended, in 2021, carrying out a daily electrocardiogram in patients over 65 years of age.

In Brazil, atrial fibrillation affects more than 5 million people. Characterized by irregular heart rate, the disease increases the risk of stroke in undiagnosed patients.

When symptomatic, the main warning is arrhythmia. In 14% to 22% of cases of atrial fibrillation, the cause is hypertension.

The undiagnosed condition, in turn, is three times more common in people with high blood pressure.

Studies indicate that hypertensive people over 65 years of age are three times more likely to develop atrial fibrillation compared to those individuals with normal blood pressure. Furthermore, patients with the condition are five times more likely to have a stroke.
