The Electoral Justice of Rio de Janeiro determined the impeachment of the mandate of federal deputy Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) and the imposition of a fine of R$ 433 thousand. He is accused of setting up a scheme to prevent reports on health in Rio in 2020, in the case revealed by TV Globo that became known as “Guardiões do Crivella”.

Judge Márcia Santos Capanema de Souza also determined that Crivella would be ineligible for eight years, starting from the 2020 municipal election. The action was filed by the PT and PCdoB coalition. The decision is from May 8, but it was only released this Sunday, informed the g1 portal.

The coalition accused the former mayor of Rio of using municipal public servants to impede the work of the press, which would be characterized as misuse of function. The judge stated that the decision had a “pedagogical-preventive character”. Crivella’s defense told g1 that the sentence does not have immediate effect, and that she has already appealed the decision.

In February, Crivella had already been convicted in the first instance, in another case, for abuse of economic power during the electoral dispute for the mayor of Rio in 2020, for sending projects to the municipal Legislature to grant tax and fiscal “benefits” to the local population, such as IPTU discounts, in the midst of the election campaign.

Already in April, the Electoral Justice determined Crivella’s ineligibility for eight years in an action filed by the current mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD). According to the decision, Crivella’s ticket would have distributed pamphlets claiming that Paes would support the legalization of drugs, abortion and the so-called “gay kit” in schools.
