DPU charges ministries on betting regulation – 09/30/2024 – Panel
The Federal Public Defender’s Office sent a letter to the Ministries of Finance and Social Development requesting information regarding the measures being taken, or being studied, to protect Bolsa Família beneficiaries who place bets on platforms known as “bets”. The document was sent on September 26th.
“Bolsa Família is aimed at families in a context of food and nutritional insecurity. Therefore, the objective of the request for information is to identify measures that protect beneficiaries from the social and economic risks arising from being a gambler”, say the defenders who signed the letter .
Members of the federal government have adopted a tougher stance against betting since the Central Bank stated that Bolsa Família beneficiaries who place bets online spent R$3 billion in August. The amount allocated to betting companies corresponds to 20% of the total amount transferred by the program in the month.
The Office of the Defender also wants a list of grant requests and authorizations already granted to companies that intend to explore betting activities.
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad (PT), stated this Monday (30) that around 500 bets that did not file a request for government regulation will have websites taken down next week by Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency).
Ministries have ten days to respond to the letter.
