Dikembe Mutombo, Hall of Famer, dies at 58 – 09/30/2024 – Sport

Basketball Hall of Fame member Dikembe Mutombo died at age 58 due to brain cancer, the NBA (National Basketball Association) said on Monday (30).

Beloved by fans, the Congolese center was selected as an eight-time NBA All-Star, using his 7-foot-2 height to become one of the league’s most feared shot blockers and winning the Defensive Player of the Year award four times.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blocking and defensive players in NBA history. Off the court, he dedicated his heart and soul to helping others,” said NBA Commissioner , Adam Silver, in a statement.

Mutombo’s outgoing personality — with his signature finger-waving celebration — made him a beloved player among fans as he played for 18 seasons with six different teams in the league, averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He reached the NBA Finals twice.

After retiring in 2009, he became the NBA’s first global ambassador and helped promote the sport in Africa.

“He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his homeland of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the African continent,” Silver said.

“He was always approachable at NBA events over the years — with his infectious smile, deep, booming voice and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of all generations.”
