The pro-life parliamentarians of the National Congress obtained the minimum number of signatures for the installation of the Joint Parliamentary Front Against Abortion and in Defense of Life. The Front has the support of 188 federal deputies and 10 senators.

Federal deputy Chris Tonietto (PL-RJ) informed the People’s Gazette that the front is officially installed, after the conference of all the signatures in the two legislative houses, Chamber and Senate. She will be the president, and will alternate the position with Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG), in case of absence.

According to the parliamentarian, the front will face possible attempts to legalize and expand abortion in Brazil, in addition to continuing with what was already being done in the last legislature, such as “the promotion of seminars, the presentation of initiatives aimed at the unconditional defense of life from conception to natural death, monitoring harmful proposals from the point of view of defending life, among many other attributions”.

Chris also mentioned that the group will “monitor propositions that undermine the dignity of human life” and intend to “enable any and all projects that deal with the unconditional defense of life, without the so-called “tortoises”, which are traps allocated in the proposals for weaken concepts and objectives, causing certain projects “to leave the legislative houses innocuous”.

Statute of the Unborn

One of the priority proposals of the Front against Abortion continues to be the approval of the Statute of the Unborn Child, but the project is still waiting for a vote in the Women’s Commission, where it has faced strong resistance from the feminist group.

Rapporteur Emanuel Pinheiro (MDB-MT) read the report at the end of last year, but decided to take into account a bill, presented by the pro-abortion deputies, which was attached to the Statute proposal on the eve of the vote and therefore it was removed from the agenda. There is still no prediction of when discussion of the project will resume.
