Learn more about the date, why it’s not a national holiday and how it’s celebrated in São Paulo.

What is Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is also known as the Blessed Sacrament. On that day, the bishops of various dioceses take to the cathedral, in procession, the consecrated host representing the body of Christ.

The feasts of Corpus Christi were instituted in the 13th century by Pope Urban IV. During the first twelve centuries, the Catholic Church celebrated the date of installation of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday.

Then, due to abuses by heretics who disrespected the date celebrated right after Carnival, it was changed to a few months later, as it still happens today.

How Corpus Christi is celebrated

In São Paulo, there are some cities that give a special touch to the date: they decorate the streets with flowers and other decorations to receive processions.

The tradition was suspended for two years by the coronavirus pandemic. In 2022, Corpus Christi processions resumed.

The decorations made in Bauru, Cedral, Ourinhos, São Joaquim da Barra, Santana do Parnaíba, among others, are well known.
