Conservation units reopen in SP this Monday (30) – 09/29/2024 – Environment
Conservation units that had been closed since September 1st due to fire risk in the state of São Paulo will reopen this Monday (30). There are 69 out of 80 state parks released to the public by the Fundação Florestal, an entity linked to Semil (Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo).
Another 13 units, located in cities without rain and with fires, such as Bauru, Valinhos and Mogi-Guaçu, remain closed until at least October 12, according to the ministry, which is part of the state crisis office.
“Reopening responsibly is based on the weather conditions predicted for the coming days and the degree of risk of forest fires”, says Rodrigo Levkovicz, executive director of the Fundação Florestal.
According to the organization, which manages 121 conservation units, teams remain dedicated to monitoring, fighting fire outbreaks and raising awareness among surrounding communities.
“In the event of an increase in risk or fire occurrences, conservation units may be closed again to ensure the safety of visitors”, adds Levkovicz.
In some of the reopened parks, activities such as ecotourism will have time changes and trails and other attractions may be closed for the safety of visitors and biodiversity (more information below).
Created by the Tarcísio de Freitas administration, Operation São Paulo Without Fire is coordinated between several state departments to combat fires during the dry period. At least R$170 million was allocated to fire prevention, which involves aircraft, a task force of 15 thousand people and 2,000 vehicles for immediate response, as well as the use of satellites and drones with thermal images.
