BTS member Suga fined $11,500 for drunk driving electric scooter

A judge at Seoul’s Western District Court issued the fine in a summary judgment last week after his case was referred to the prosecutor’s office, a court official said on Monday. In August, the songwriter and rapper apologized for the incident, calling it “careless and wrong behavior,” and police also revoked his license for driving the electric scooter while drunk. Suga rode a scooter and tripped while parking at night, according to his record label Big Hit Music, which is part of K-pop company HYBE 352820.KS. The record label also said he failed a breathalyzer test to measure his blood alcohol level conducted by police. Since announcing a break from group projects in June 2022, BTS members have pursued solo activities before beginning military service. Suga, 31, is involved in social service work to fulfill his commitment to military service. The drunk driving incident is the latest example of K-pop artists sometimes failing to maintain their pristine image. The case left some BTS fans upset over his action of sending flower wreaths near HYBE headquarters, with messages on boards calling for him to leave the band. Those notified of summary judgments may request a regular trial within seven days to contest the decision. Suga’s record label did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
