The Brazilian feature A Flor do Buriti, produced by the Brazilian Renée Nader Messora and the Portuguese João Salaviza, was awarded on Friday night (27) at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, in France. He won the Prix D’ensemble (Best Team award) in the show “Um Certo Olhar” (Un Certain Regard).
The film, produced by the Minas Gerais company Entre Filmes, opened on May 23 and covers the last 80 years of the history of the Krahô, an indigenous people who live in the north of Tocantins, on the border with Maranhão and Piauí. Different forms of resistance are portrayed, such as the struggle for land, for greater freedom, for the preservation of ancestral rites and the nature of the communities where they live. An event highlighted in the film is the massacre that took place in 1940. It is estimated that farmers in the region killed at least 26 people from the Krahô people.
The show also awarded the main prize of the night to How To Have Sex, by Molly Manning Walker. The New Voice trophy went to Augur from Baloji. Goodbye Julia, by Mohamed Kordofani, won the Freedom Prize. The Mother Of All Lies, by Asmae El Moudir, won the director category, and Hounds, by Kamal Lazraq, the jury.
The Cannes Film Festival continues this Saturday night (27), when disputes take place for the highest prize: the Palme d’Or. Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz competes with British film Firebrand. Highlight in the cast for actors Jude Law and Alicia Vikander. The plot tells about the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII, in Tudor England, who tries to promote radical Protestant beliefs in the nation.
