Brazil x England: Endrick scores on Dorival’s debut – 03/23/2024 – Sport

In Dorival Júnior’s debut in charge of the national team, Brazil beat England 1-0 with a goal from Endrick in a Wembley packed with more than 83 thousand fans.

The young 17-year-old Palmeiras striker pushed the ball into the net of English goalkeeper Pickford with his first touch of the ball. He took advantage of the rebound after Vinícius Júnior’s shot. It is Endrick’s first goal for the senior team.

With the victory, the Brazilian team interrupts a sequence of bad performances and negative results that put pressure on newcomer Dorival Júnior even in a friendly match.

The first half alternated periods of English and Brazilian dominance. Brazil, however, created the best chances and came closest to opening the scoring.

In the 8th minute, Rodrygo made a good move and had his shot saved by Pickford. Three minutes later, Lucas Paquetá set up a beautiful counterattack with a pass over the defense to Vinícius Júnior — a duo that has known each other well since their time at Flamengo’s academy.

Real Madrid’s left winger cut past goalkeeper Pickford, but finished weakly. One of his main opponents in Europe, right-back Kyle Walker took the ball away as it approached the goal.

Paquetá shot the post at 34; Raphinha also missed the goalkeeper after a mistake by Harry Maguire, a Manchester United defender known for his lack of skill.

England were also dangerous, especially in aerial plays: there were four balls sent into goalkeeper Bento’s area that created chances for the English.

Gareth Southgate’s team began to dominate the match after 20 minutes, when midfielder Bellingham approached winger Phil Foden on the right side of the English attack.

Winger Anthony Gordon, from millionaire Newcastle, created two other dangerous plays for the English. Watkins almost shot alone in the area, at 17, but debutant Fabrício Bruno touched the ball beforehand and saved Brazil from the first goal.

The second half didn’t have as many chances created by both teams. The replacements of stars from both teams, with the departures of Bellingham and Rodrygo, reduced the skill, but brought in rested players, and the game gained a new rhythm.

The goal came after a steal from Andreas Pereira in midfield. He played the ball high to Vinícius Júnior, who fought with the defenders and touched the ball to Pickford.

The English goalkeeper saved the first shot, but the ball went towards young Endrick, who only pushed it into the goal.

The Brazilian striker celebrated effusively and was greeted by all his teammates.

With a squad full of injured players, including the loss of midfielder Casemiro, the captain chosen by Dorival for the team was right-back Danilo — the most experienced player in the current squad, aged 32.

Brazilian players debuted their new national team shirts against England. They wore the alternative blue uniform, which now has high relief and a centralized shield.

The shirt also had, on one of the arms, a patch in honor of Zagallo. Mario Jorge Lobo lifted the World Cup trophy — twice as a player (1958 and 1962), once as a coach (1970) and once as a coordinator (1994).

He died in January this year, aged 92, from multiple organ failure.

Dorival Júnior took charge of the national team after securing three good jobs at Brazilian clubs in the last two years: Ceará, Flamengo and São Paulo.

He, however, was the CBF’s (Brazilian Football Confederation) plan B. The directors were negotiating the hiring of coach Carlo Ancelotti, now at Real Madrid.

The president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, even announced his interest in reaching an agreement with Ancelotti, and leaders linked to the confederation announced behind the scenes a verbal agreement with the Italian.

The coach ended up receiving a renewal proposal with the Merengue club and decided to remain in European lands. As Dorival was one of the standout coaches in recent years in the Brazilian Championship, he ended up being chosen for the role.
