The blind men’s soccer team asserted its favoritism and won the second title of the International Grand Prix, in São Paulo, undefeated. This Saturday (27), the five-time Paralympic champion team defeated Japan by 2-0 in the final, with goals from Nonato and Tiago Paraná, who sealed the victory six minutes from the end. For the first time, the Grand Prix, International Federation of Sports for the Blind, was held in the country.
It was the team’s second victory over the Asian team in the competition: the first was 3-0 in the debut of the group stage. To reach the dispute for the gold medal, at the Paralympic Training Center, the selection applied 4 to 1 in France, current European champion, in the semifinal, on Friday (26). In the other semi, Japan overcame Argentina on penalties (2-1), after a 2-2 tie in normal time. Earlier, in the second game of the group stage, the team led by coach Fábio Vasconcelos beat England by 2-0.
Looking forward to the Paris Games
Brazil is the only five-time Paralympic champion, with five consecutive gold medals since the Athens Games (2004). The sport was called five-a-side football until the Tokyo Games.
The country’s participation in the International Grand Prix is part of the preparation for Paris 2024. There will be eight teams in the French capital, four of which are already guaranteed a presence: France, Turkey, Morocco and China.
The two main competitions of the selection this year, qualifying for Paris 2024, will be the World Cup, in August, in Birmingham (England) – included in the schedule of the IBSA World Games – and the Parapan American Games, in November, in Santiago (Chile).
To confirm its place, Brazil will have to be among the top three in the World Cup or win the Parapan.
