Boulos cites civility pact in debates after chair attack – 09/16/2024 – Power
On the agenda at the Pinheiros Municipal Market this Monday (16), the candidate for Mayor of São Paulo Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) said that he will propose to the opposing campaigns a “pact of civility” in the televised debates.
In a debate on Sunday night (15), José Luiz Datena (PSDB) attacked Pablo Marçal (PRTB) with a chair and was expelled by the TV Cultura organization. Marçal was taken to the hospital, and the debate continued without the two.
When asked if he would even seek out Marçal’s campaign, Boulos said: “Our campaign will engage in dialogue with all those who want an environment of decency.”
The influencer has already accused him, without any evidence or proof, of being a cocaine user. Sheet revealed that Marçal is using the case of a namesake of Boulos to accuse the federal deputy.
Regarding the rules of this “pact”, Boulos said only that he will propose a “minimum standard of civility and good behavior in debates”. He recalled his clashes with Bruno Covas (PSDB) in 2020, which had a civilized atmosphere, despite mutual criticism.
When asked, the PSOL candidate also said that Datena should not be banned from attending the debates.
“[Marçal] he disrespected rules, offended, attacked people’s honor, invented lies live on national television,” said Boulos. “To the extent that a person who acts like him is present in the debates, Datena should also be present,” he argued.
Marçal intended to remain in the debate, as shown in the audio of the discussion that followed the attack, but he changed his mind and was taken to the hospital.
After being discharged, he promised to go to court to request the rejection of Datena’s candidacy. He filed a complaint at the police station and underwent a forensic examination at the Forensic Medical Institute. The medical report from the Sírio-Libanês hospital mentions trauma to the chest and wrist, “without major complications.”
“You broke my rib, man,” says a message Marçal sent to Datena at 3:47 a.m., as reported by the Monica Bergamo column. According to the Painel column, it was the accusation of “jack” – rapist, in prison slang – that got Datena mad. Marçal used the term when recalling accusations of sexual harassment against the presenter.
In 2019, Bruna Drews, then a reporter for the Brasil Urgente program, said she had been harassed by Datena. She stated at the time that the presenter frequently made comments about her body, in a sexual tone.
After the case became public, she retracted her statement and filed a statement with a notary public in which she claims to have lied. Days later, she stated on social media that she had been induced to retract her statement.
In a statement, TV Cultura regretted the chair-throwing incident and claimed that, after the attack, all measures were taken, in accordance with the rules previously established, including the expulsion of Datena. “The debate was maintained after consultation and agreement with the other candidates.”
